The following article by Janet Levy on the American Thinker makes an interesting argument, namely that the West has already succumbed, at least psychologically, to the de facto imposition of Islamic law. The desecration of a Christian symbol such as a crucifix in a jar of urine is not only tolerated, but celebrated by some as art, and taxpayer funded art to boot. But a book published by Yale University Press on the Danish cartoons of Mohammed that sparked Muslim violence contains no illustrations of those cartoons, for fear that they would spark more violence. Her argument supports my belief that Muslims have learned to use our own notions of political correctness against us. Islam enjoys a protected status in America that no other religion can claim.

I think Levy’s basic message is valid, although she may have overstated some what just how far out on the slippery slope we are presently located.
My thinking starts out with an assessment of Islam and the Koran which serves as its “Constitution.” One big difference is that the U.S. has a carefully spelled out structure for interpreting the U.S. Constitution, ending with consideration by nine Justices who, at least in theory, are highly educated and trained jurists who base their decisions on the wording of the Constitution, precedent and recognized standards of legal analysis. Shariah law is “interpreted” all too often by poorly educated religious zealots bent on punishing alleged miscreants by applying harsh and brutal standards virtually unchanged since the seventh century. Justice as we know it plays no part in their edicts. And often males are recognized as being superior to females, something that finds wide support in the Koran.
Islam as it is widely practiced throughout much of the world is a primitive, barbaric, despotic and brutal religion which embraces policies and practices that are the direct antithesis of those embodied in our bill of rights. It is true that Muslims migrating to “western” societies have embarked on a program along the lines decried by Levy. It is true that in the U.S. the Muslims have taken a page from the Jewish book by establishing organizations such as C.A.I.R. (Congress on American-Islamic Relations, or some such). Like the Jewish Anti-Defamation League and B’nai B’rith established years ago, C.A.I.R. has as its mission immediately pouncing on anything that they deem detrimental to the Muslim image, resorting to intimidation when all else fails. It is part of a well-planned Muslim movement not only to get Muslims widely accepted in the U.S., but to ultimately impose their ways on the rest of us. If you doubt my assessment, you have merely to look to Denmark, Holland, England, France and Germany to see similar efforts that are more advanced than they are currently in the U.S.
The camel’s nose? Actually, the camel has two noses: 1) The realization of a special status for Muslims, along the lines suggested by Levy; 2) Our acceptance of the notion that we should allow Muslims to apply the Shariah within the Muslim community. Once that is accomplished, it’s only a question of time before the Muslims will strive to impose Shariah on the rest of us…reducing history’s greatest nation to the level of a seventh century Arabian caliphate.
Over stated a bit? Maybe. But when we start recognizing a special status for Muslims in our society, privileges and immunities that do not apply to the rest of us, we have started out on that slippery slope.
